Liminal Spaces in Gaming

LS

  • Superliminal (2019)
  • The Stanley Parable (2013)

Besides the mentioned games with a concrete topic of liminal space, I remembered several totally unrelated games I played when I was a kid at primary school, which however gave me a very strange feeling of a mixture of nostalgia, familiarity, loneliness and sometimes a little bit discomfort. I was sometimes very curious and addicted to this feeling but I could not tell what it exactly was and why I felt this way at that time.

That is a very interesting experience. I will try to recall these scenes and write something about it. Most of the scenes come from maps of Counter-Strike, including CS1.5, CS1.6, CSS. Even now, I have a very clear memory of what I felt when I was wandering in those empty maps as I did not know how to add bots or the maps did not support adding bots. I roughly recalled several maps: the VIP map (Liminal CS), and the one in abandoned skyscraper (the texture of skyscrapers far away on skybox is impressive), CLP mill, Aztec and Prodigy (very impressive). I may talk about the unique aesthetics of them next time.
